Episode 2 – First steps with high school students: 5 workshops to decode digital challenges

At Jeanne d’Arc high school, a group of 12 students took part in a five-session program focused on sustainable IT practices. The workshops addressed topics like environmental impact, artificial intelligence, and social media. The students’ curiosity and critical thinking made the experience rewarding and led to plans for a second group after spring break.

Episode 1 – When teachers commit to more sustainable IT practices

On February 10, 2025, around twenty teachers at Jeanne d’Arc Middle School in Gex took part in a participatory conference on sustainable IT practices. Together, we explored the environmental and social impacts of digital technology, debunked common misconceptions, and discussed future challenges linked to AI and critical resources. This awareness session marks the first step in an ambitious educational project for all 8th-grade classes.

Software environmental impact

Software, often seen as immaterial, may seem to have no direct environmental impact. However, the growing inefficiency of software, known as “bloatware,” significantly contributes to hardware over-consumption and the escalating carbon footprint of the digital industry. In 2019, digital technology accounted for nearly double the greenhouse gas emissions of the air transport industry, with most impacts tied to the 34 billion digital devices owned by users. The solution lies in adopting eco-design practices, which could reduce environmental impact, offer competitive advantages, and help businesses comply with emerging regulations.
